STEP 1 - MORATORIUM ON DATA CENTRES?
There must be global agreement to stop building large data-centres for AI immediatly.
Although the logical top priority is to establish global regulation to manage the Internet under the control of an Independant I.T. focused Federation of countries, this cannot be done quickly. So at the same time as setting this Federation up we must agree some global actions that will help reduce the risk of things getting worse. The situation is far more serious than people realise.
Stopping the building of new Data Centres for AI immediatly will:
- slow down AI development. AI is incredibly hungry and will always need more power and space and will never have a positive ROI the way it is being implemented.
- make people employed in AI industries realise they do not have endless resource to build inefficient systems.
- slow down the disasterous effect that building these data centres is having on the environment. This is not just an energy issue, the demand for minerals must now be huge.
- will allow hardware suppliers to concentrate on supplying chips and other I.T. equipment at a more cost effective price to create and maintain critical systems. The demand from AI is forcing these prices up and restricting supply exposing the systems we rely on just to live our day to day lives.
- help to focus I.T. skills and resources on the more important Service Management issues with the Interenet and connected critical systems/applications starting with security. These problems MUST BE TACKLED BEFORE WE IMPLEMENT ANY FURTHER AI SYSTEMS as we have already gone too far to prevent many services and companies failing. Most of the rest of this web site explains exactly what these problems are and what needs to be done.
In the UK we must include a statement in planning applications for new or expanding data centres to state what type of data will be held in the data centre. Buiding a data centre for a new NHS system or order fulfilment system for a growing SME may be justified, but building it for AI development or social media may not be. This would then have to be enforced.
